Contact Matrix
A contact matrix is a structured table that records the average number of interactions that members of one demographic group have with members of another group over a given period. Each row represents a source group—often defined by age, occupation, or location—and each column represents a target group; the entry at their intersection tells how many contacts a typical person in the source group has with people in the target group. By summarising who meets whom and how often, the matrix captures the mixing patterns that underlie many forms of social contact.
The importance of a contact matrix lies in its ability to translate human behaviour into quantitative inputs for models of disease spread. When an infectious agent moves through a population, the rate at which it jumps from one person to another depends directly on how often different groups interact. By feeding a contact matrix into transmission equations, researchers can estimate key quantities such as the basic reproduction number, assess the impact of interventions that reduce contacts in specific groups, and design targeted vaccination or social‑distancing policies that are more efficient than blanket measures.
Contact matrices appear wherever public health officials need to forecast outbreaks or evaluate control strategies. They are a staple of influenza and COVID‑19 modelling, where age‑specific contact patterns shape predictions of hospital demand. Beyond infectious disease, similar tables help demographers study intergenerational support, sociologists explore segregation in schools or workplaces, and planners design transportation systems that reflect actual movement between neighbourhoods.
