Fed-Batch Fermentation
Fed‑batch fermentation is a way of growing microorganisms in which the initial vessel contains a starter amount of nutrients and then additional feed is added gradually over time as the culture progresses. The feed can be sugars, minerals, oxygen carriers or other growth factors, and it is provided according to a schedule that matches the organism’s consumption rate. By postponing all the nutrients until the cells have already multiplied, the process avoids the problem of excess substrate early on, which can otherwise choke the cells or cause unwanted by‑products.
