Runoff

Runoff is the portion of rain, snowmelt, or any other form of precipitation that does not soak into the ground but instead travels across the land surface and eventually reaches streams, rivers, lakes, or oceans. When water lands on an impermeable surface such as rock, compacted soil, paved roads, or even dense vegetation, gravity pulls it downhill, gathering in temporary channels before joining larger bodies of water. In contrast, the part that does infiltrate the soil replenishes groundwater and supports plant uptake, leaving runoff as the observable movement of water above ground.
